Pipe bursting vs. lining
- Pipe bursting pulls a bursting head through the old pipe, breaking it outward while pulling a new HDPE pipe in behind it. You get a brand-new pipe, and it can be the same size or larger. Needs an entry and exit pit.
- Cured-in-place lining (CIPP) inserts a resin-saturated liner, inflates it and cures it into a new pipe inside the old one. Often only needs the existing cleanout. Slightly reduces the diameter. See pipe relining.
- Spot repair fixes one bad joint or a short cracked section. The cheapest option when the rest of the line is sound.
When trenchless will not work
Trenchless is not magic. A lateral with a deep belly (a sag that holds water) needs the slope corrected, which means digging. A line that has fully collapsed may need excavation at that spot before it can be burst or lined. And if the pipe sits very shallow under a slab, the access plan changes. That is why the camera inspection and a locate come first.

Sewer lateral replacement is permitted work. In the City of Temecula we pull the permit through Building and Safety. In French Valley and other unincorporated areas, it goes through Riverside County.
