Drain Cleaning in Temecula, CA

Clear it, then find out why it clogged so it does not come back next month.

Most Temecula homes built from the 1980s on use black ABS plastic drain pipe, the standard for California tract construction in that era. ABS does not rust like old cast iron, so when it clogs, the cause is almost always what goes into it: kitchen grease, hair, wipes, roots at a joint, or a sag in the yard line.

We clear drains with the right tool for the pipe, and when a line clogs more than once, we put a camera in it so you can see the cause on screen.

What clogs which drain

  • Kitchen sink: grease, coffee grounds and rice or pasta starch. Grease cools and hardens in the line under the slab.
  • Bathroom sink: hair, toothpaste and soap scum around the pop-up stopper. Usually a 15 minute fix.
  • Shower and tub: hair plus soap. Hard water makes soap scum thicker and stickier.
  • Toilet: wipes labeled flushable, too much paper in a 1.28 gallon flush, or a toy.
  • Main line: roots at joints, a belly where the yard line settled, or grease from years of kitchen use.

Cable, jetter or camera?

A drum cable (snake) cuts through hair and soft blockages and is the right first tool for most single-fixture clogs. For grease or roots in a main line, hydro jetting scours the pipe wall clean instead of punching a hole through the blockage.

A camera inspection tells us what we are dealing with: roots, a broken joint, a belly holding water, or a pipe that is simply dirty. If you are buying a home, a sewer camera is worth doing before closing. More on that on our plumbing inspections page.

Where your responsibility ends

In most of the valley the homeowner owns the sewer lateral from the house to where it connects to EMWD's main, often under the street or in the parkway. If a clog is in your lateral, it is a plumber's job. If several houses on the same street back up at once, the public main is the likely problem: call EMWD.

A cleanout makes all of this faster and cheaper. Many Temecula homes have one near the front of the house, a capped 3 or 4 inch pipe sticking up from the ground or planter. If yours is buried, we can locate it or install one.

Keeping drains clear on Temecula water

Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing. Use a hair catcher in showers. Do not rely on chemical drain openers. They generate heat, can soften older PVC and ABS joints, and make the job dangerous for whoever opens the line next. Once a year, a kettle of hot (not boiling) water down each drain helps move soap film.

When a clog is more than a clog

These point to the main line, not just one fixture.

01
What you notice

Toilet gurgles when the washer drains

Air is being pushed through a partly blocked main line.

What to do

Avoid laundry until the main is cleared.

02
What you notice

Water comes up in the shower when you flush

The lowest drain shows a main line backup first.

What to do

Stop using water and call. This is a main line clear.

03
What you notice

Several fixtures slow at once

The common line downstream is restricted.

What to do

Have the main cleared and camera inspected.

04
What you notice

Clog returns every few months

Roots, a belly or a broken joint keep catching debris.

What to do

Camera it. Recurring clogs have a physical cause.

How a drain call works

Most single drains take under an hour.

1

Ask the right questions

Which fixtures are slow, since when, and what has been tried.

2

Clear from the best access

Cleanout or fixture, with a cable sized to the pipe.

3

Test with real flow

Run water from several fixtures together to confirm it is clear.

4

Camera if it repeats

Recorded footage and a plain explanation of what we saw.

Meadowview

Mature trees and older lines mean roots in yard laterals.

Old Town Temecula

Restaurant grease and older mixed piping in commercial buildings.

Local factors that matter

Hard water soap scum

Thicker scum in showers and tubs, especially without a softener.

Low-flow fixtures

1.28 gallon toilets need good slope and clean lines to carry waste.

Landscape roots

Irrigated trees near laterals find any loose joint.

Call (951) 744-8310
Are chemical drain cleaners safe for my pipes?

We do not recommend them. They rarely clear grease or roots, can damage older joints, and make the next repair hazardous.

How do I find my sewer cleanout?

Look near the front of the house or along the side yard for a capped pipe 3 to 4 inches wide. In some homes it is in the garage or under a planter.

Why does my kitchen sink clog every few months?

Grease builds up in the line under the slab. Snaking punches a hole through it; jetting removes it. Changing what goes down the sink helps most.

Is a backup in my house EMWD's problem?

Usually not. Your lateral is typically your responsibility. If multiple homes on your street back up at once, call EMWD.

Slow drain or full backup?

Call (951) 744-8310. If water is coming up a drain, stop running water in the house until we get there.
