Old Town Temecula is the oldest part of the city. The Magee Store opened the first inland Southern California post office here in 1859, and the Front Street corridor still has buildings from the late 1800s alongside newer mixed-use projects and the Civic Center on Main Street.
That range of construction means there is no single typical Old Town plumbing system.
What you may find in an Old Town building
- Mixed materials. Copper, galvanized remnants, ABS, PVC and PEX in the same structure, the result of decades of remodels.
- Tight access. Shared walls, small crawlspaces and finished storefronts.
- Commercial kitchens in buildings that were not designed for them.
- Grease interceptors that need regular pumping.
- Fire sprinkler and irrigation backflow assemblies that need annual tests.
Solutions that fit Old Town
Camera before you cut
A camera inspection identifies pipe material and condition before anyone opens a wall or floor. In a historic building, that matters.
Relining instead of excavation
Where a drain line runs under a finished floor or patio, pipe relining creates a new pipe inside the old one through an existing cleanout.
Scheduled jetting for restaurants
Kitchen lines between sinks and grease interceptors clog with fats, oils and grease. EMWD regulates commercial dischargers through its source control program. A hydro jetting schedule matched to interceptor pumping prevents weekend backups.
Annual backflow testing
Testable assemblies need a certified test every year. See backflow prevention.
Water heaters for commercial demand
Restaurants and tasting rooms often need larger or multiple water heaters, or booster heaters for dish machines.
Creek-side drainage
Murrieta Creek runs along the west side of Old Town. Low-lying properties near the creek should keep drains and any sump or drainage pumps in working order before winter storms.
Permits
All of Old Town is inside the City of Temecula, so permits go through the City's Building and Safety Division at the Civic Center.
