If the same drain clogs every few months, the clog is not really being cleared. A cable (snake) punches a hole through it, water flows again, and the buildup on the pipe walls catches the next round of debris. Hydro jetting removes the buildup.
How it works
A jetter pumps water through a hose to a nozzle with jets pointing backward and sometimes one forward. The forward jet breaks through the blockage. The rear jets pull the hose along and scour the pipe wall as it moves. Different nozzles handle grease, roots or general cleaning.
Snake vs jetter
| Drain snake | Hydro jetter | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Hair, soft clogs, single fixtures | Grease, scale, roots, recurring clogs |
| Result | Opens a path | Cleans pipe wall |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Risk on damaged pipe | Low | Needs camera first |
When jetting makes sense
- Kitchen lines packed with grease.
- Main lines with roots at joints.
- Restaurant and winery drains with heavy use.
- Before installing a pipe liner, which needs a clean pipe.
When it does not
- A simple bathroom sink hair clog. A cable is faster and cheaper.
- A pipe that is collapsed or badly broken. Jetting can wash soil into the line. That is why a camera inspection should come first.
Why it matters in Temecula
Most Temecula homes have ABS or PVC drains, which handle jetting well. Kitchen grease is the most common recurring clog in residential homes. In commercial areas like Old Town, EMWD regulates commercial discharges, and clean lines help keep grease out of the 1,813-mile public sewer system.
Cost
Published 2026 data puts severe clogs that need jetting at up to about $1,600, compared with $100 to $300 for a minor drain clear. Most residential jetting falls between those numbers.
Can you jet drains yourself?
Consumer jetter attachments exist for pressure washers, but they lack the flow and nozzles of professional equipment, and without a camera you do not know what you are jetting. For a recurring main line clog, hire it out.
